What happened
A research team tested IDR-1002 as a dual-purpose adjunct for vital-pulp therapy: reduce bacterial and inflammatory pressure while supporting repair. The peptide was also placed in an enzyme-responsive hydrogel designed to release its payload in an inflamed microenvironment.
What the study found
IDR-1002 acted against multispecies biofilms and selected oral bacteria. In human dental-pulp stem cells it reduced several inflammatory signals and reactive oxygen species while supporting wound closure and odontogenic markers. In a rat pulpitis model, treatment reduced inflammatory-cell infiltration and improved tissue organization.
Evidence check
The experiments span cells, biofilms and an animal model, which strengthens the mechanistic package but does not establish performance in human dental care. Local delivery, material degradation, dose, durability and comparisons with established procedures require clinical evaluation.
Why it matters
Many antimicrobial strategies control microbes at the cost of host tissue. A peptide that also regulates inflammation and repair could support more biologically conservative treatment. The work is preclinical and should not be confused with an approved dental product.
